I wanted to have a place to share arts and crafts/activities you do with your one year old. I thought i would put an age on it b/c otherwise we'll have tons to weed through. We could do a separate one for under one and then one for two's and so on.
Anita, you mentioned a footprint craft. tell me more...
I don't really have any great arts and crafts ideas. I just really have activities that we do regularly. Rhett enjoys painting with water outside. He also likes to paint inside on the sliding glass door (just water). We have also painted with watercolors on his easel set up in the bathtub to contain the mess. We do sidewalk chalk on the concrete as well.
For each month I try to do an activity.
Jan - cut out paper snowflakes - we read the directions and cut them out (it was all me but wanted to model for him how to follow written directions.
Feb - cut out red hearts and "hid" them around the room. When he would find one (they were out in the open) i would say where he found it. Ex: you found that one on top of your choo - choo)
March - can't remember
April - Easter eggs - used an egg carton and had him move the eggs from the bucket to the carton. we worked on colors. also, made a bunny headband (he loves to wear hats).
May - made "flower basket". cut a semi circle, taped it like a cone, added a strip of paper for the handle. he could load it with whatever and carry it.
so, as you can see mine are super simple. I would love any ideas you have.

Can you tell Kristalyn used to be a teacher? :) For those of you who don't know, she and I used to teach together several years back.
K- UGH... reading to perform a task! Remember the pinecones? It's great that you're starting Rhett early!
Kristalyn...love your ideas! The valentines day craft I did with Jada, consisted of black finger paint and dipping jadas feet in the paint (kinda messy but sent her into a fit of giggles) and placing her feet on a sheet of red construction paper in the shape of a large heart, and writing around it..."leaving my mark on your heart". It was very cute!
Kristalyn, you are so crafty! Did you teach elementary school? I taught high school (AP Bio), so I found that the "crafts" that I did with Chloe starting about 1 yr old were always like toned-down science labs. We did more experiments than crafts like measuring, sifting, pouring, etc.
all i can say is WOW. hailey's almost 3 and i don't even spend that much time doing crafts w/ her.
oh I love it! My daughter's 2 now so I'm doing something else with her like cutting colored paper into shapes and use gluestick to paste it onto a big cardboard. When she was 15 months old till 18 months, her favorite game (not really crafty but...) was to play shopping. We bought lots of fake food, had a shopping cart, and I'd say: Mama wants to eat fish tonight. She'd pick up a fish and put it in the shopping cart. She couldn't say these words yet, but understood me when I showed her how to do it.
Julia,
can you tell me some of the "science labs" you did? i did teach elem. school primarily first and second grades. my brain is set up for reading and writing so science and math are way out there for me. I would love to broaden Rhett's horizons, though.
Anita,
very cute footprint idea. that is a great keepsake. i sent the grandparents photo cards for valentines so maybe this next year i could make them this instead. thanks for the idea.
Great ideas, Kris. I also love using the Color Wonder finger paints. No mess, and the paintings end up looking rather Picasso-esque. :-)
Kristalyn: I'm in the midst of a house move, but when I've got more time to sit down and type, I'll post all the things that I did with Chloe that are "science-y."
miranda,
how/where do you put Dakota so that the mess is contained? do you put a mat under her, put a large bib on her???????? i have thought of finger paints but afraid to do it b/c i thought rhett would get it on his clothes and the floor.
With regard to mess ladies, they're kids! Allow them to make mess, it's fun! clothes and surfaces can be washed!
