Going from 3 to 2 Naps

here's a question- NJ is currently taking 3 naps per day, usually lasting 1-1.5 hrs each or two 1.5-2 hr naps, and a 30 min catnap. I know that in the next couple of months I will have to drop the last nap. He currently stays awake for 2 hrs at a time during the day.

How did you go about transitioning your baby to 2 naps and increasing his/her awake time? Cold turkey? Or gradually? How gradually? When?

I don't have to plan it, my baby told ME how she wanted to nap. She slept 3 major naps till she was 7 or 8 months old. Then at 8 months she had trouble with her mid day nap. So I took away that nap but moved her 3rd nap up earlier by an hour or so. And it worked. She was taking 2 major naps ( 1.5-2 hours each) from 8 to 13 months. Then I did the same thing, she had trouble with morning nap (got to nap later and later in the morning) so I simply took the morning nap away and moved p.m. nap up (from 2pm to 12pm). She still takes 1 nap a day at 26 months old. Let's hope I can keep it that way :)

I totally agree. Rhett "told" me when he was ready to transition out of 3, down to 2, and then down to 1. i can't remember how on the 3 down to 2, but with the 2 down to 1 i would put him down at the regular nap times and the afternoon one he would just cry and cry or play and never sleep. i then took the morning one and gradually, by 30 min. increments, made it later and later. so i went with 10 for a week or so then 10:30 and so on until i got to where we are now at 12:30. i also knew when to move it to later b/c he wasn't napping very long. he takes a 2 hour nap or so now and some days he would just nap 45 min or so, after that for a few days i would push it later so he was more tired. it is at 12:30 b/c he literally starts closing his eyes while eating lunch many days or is very slow moving and stares off while eating.

I am going to have to agree with that....Jada told me when she was ready to transition to less naps. I think as they become more active, with crawling, playing, eating more, they tend to have a little more energy and they want to explore a little more instead of sleeping all day:) Now at 10 months old she takes 1 maybe 2 naps per day, always one late morning, around 10 or 11 and it lasts an hour, and if she has another its usually late afternoon around 3 or 4 for an hour. Her bedtime has stayed consistent since she was 6 months old...dinner at 6:30, bath at 7pm, bottle and bedtime story to sleep by 8:00...never fails and she wakes up like an alarm at 6:00am every morning....lets keep our fingers crossed we can maintain this pattern for a little while longer as I have learned that nothing is set in stone when it comes to Jada:)
