Convertible carseats

We are finally getting around to switching the infant carrier to a convertible carseat for NJ. We have a Graco Comfortsport that I got off of my registry but it seems that everyone else is getting a Britax Marathon/Boulevard. Should I be concerned? The B is way more expensive, but I wonder if I'm sacrificing quality by going with the Graco. What convertible carseats do you have? Any recommendations? If need be, I will look into returning the Graco and getting another one.

I bought Chloe a Britax Decathlon because of it had higher weight limits than the Marathon. We opted not for the Boulevard because my friends who have this complained about the "wings." Their kids would lean forward to look around from the wings, and that to me is unsafe. Keep in mind too the size of your car when you pick a carseat. If you have a smaller car, the bigger Britax models may not fit easily when rear-facing, especially if one driver is tall and has the driver seat pushed way back. We picked the Britax not just for the safety ratings but for its comfort too. Chloe would scream in her Graco Snugride, and the day we switched her over to the Britax, she stopped crying in the car.

Forgot to add that I bought mine from Tinyride.com and also Babyage.com because of free shipping and no tax.

Just be careful with britax marathon... some of the carseat covers are toxic... you can buy replacement covers.

Ok, So we have graco, mostly because that's what we can afford! lol
I guess as long as it's a five point harness and in the car securely it should be safe.

lol.. u r so gonna be confused with many answers! :) Rhi was right... My guess is that if TSA requires a strict rule on carseat, all carseats should be fine (they're all tested at a speed I think). But I got Britax more for comfort. I went with a $99 Alpha Omega convertible seat for LExa 2 years ago and lo and behold she cried in it the whole time after we got police installed it. Plus it wasn't even safe, I can post a blog photo on how her head hanged outside after car moved around. I was so scared and exchanged it for Britax Marathon, she was very comfortable in it and the seat was plush, cover was removable for easy cleaning. I love it so much we got a 2nd one to put in dh's car as a spare. Now it's Hayden's seat-to-be (I'm sad to give up the carrier b/c of the convenience... We got the 2nd Britax online, great deal from a google search, we paid $199, no tax or shipping.

I'm so glad you asked this question, Kyung! We were trying to figure this out too. After reading this and doing some other research, we went with the Britax Marathon. It's on its way here and I'm really excited. =)

I'm trying to hold off on getting one....so I don't have to get the convertible. Rachel's infant seat is the Graco SafeSeat which goes to 30lb and 32in long....so I'm hoping to get the car seat at one year that's forward facing only, and later converts to a booster seat. That way, I have less car seats to store for future kids, and hopefully, spend less. But I dunno. Anyone opt for a different car seat after the first year, other than the convertible seat? Just curious to see what the recommendations are.....

one other suggestion is to check out Baby Bargains. They provide the 411 on all brands for all types of car seats. They also make some great recommendations. I highly recommend that book.

Jill, my sister did that, and she likes the booster just fine. We decided to get a durable one that will last because it is our prayer that we will use it many times. =) We hope to be using the infant seat, the convertible seat, *and* a booster at once someday, Lord willing.

Hmmm. That's a good point. I think they're in a booster for a while now - like up until age 6 or something? If that's the case, even w/ the 2-3 year space we hope to have in between, we would run into some issues so we'd need a booster seat anyway. I hadn't thought about that. I was just hoping to have to spend less money on car seats, but it looks like there isn't anyway around it. Good thing is that booster seats alone aren't exensive - like less than 50 bucks. Forward facing car seats/booster seat combos are just as pricey as a convertible seat. So, I guess if we had to have a booster and forward facing car seat in the car at the same time, cost-wise, it works out the same.....
