Breath-Holding Spells

So this has got to be the scariest thing Kathryn's ever done, and I'm hoping one of you can help! Kathryn is 13 months old, and a few weeks ago she hit her head pretty hard and started crying...then took one of those deep, deep breaths babies take before they cry louder. Only instead of crying louder, she got limp in my arms and passed out for like a second. Then she started wailing, then got over it and was fine. In typical first-mom fashion, I freaked out, called my husband to have him come home from work for a little while, and we watched her closely to make sure she was okay. She was really fine so we didn't worry about it. Until last night, when it happened again.

So...have any of your little ones ever held their breath to the point of passing out for a second? Or do you know of any babies this has happened to? If so, is there anything I can do to prevent this? I made a doctor appointment for tomorrow just to make sure nothing else is going on (I'm going to ask that they check her iron-level), but I'd love any other info if you have it!

This probably isn't what your daughter has, but a mom in our playgroup had this happen to her son. It wasn't an isolated incident. For a period of a few hours, he kept passing out and coming to. It turns out that he has unusually small airways that will eventually correct itself over time so whenever he catches a cold or something that might compromise his breathing, he's at risk for passing out.

That sounds really scary! I have heard of toddlers holding their breath to get their own way, but your little one seems way too young to be doing that!
