We've tried several different sippy cups (for water and diluted juice) and and concensus is that NJ knows how to hold and drink from them, but isn't interested! He may take a sip here and there, but most of the time he will shake them and throw them. He actually was doing better with them a couple of months ago, but now he think they are toys. Or, he takes a sip and spits it right out over and over so that within a span of a few minutes, his shirt is soaked.
Is this a phase and will it pass? If so, when? Or do I need to start looking for another type of cup? he will not take a bottle anymore.

It's a combination of age and the type of sippy cup. I found since Chloe never was very good with the bottle, she had a hard time with any sippies that required her to lift up the cup and tilt it at a great angle to suck. The Avent sippies were the worst. She didn't mind the Gerber ones with the wider mouth, though her all time favorite was the Nuby. It took her until almost 12 months old to figure out the sippy effectively, and even then she preferred the straw cup.
We actually taught her to use the straw cup by drawing up a little bit of liquid, holding one end closed so that the water didn't dribble out, and then held the other end to her mouth. We did this a few times and eventually let her try to suck it out. Once she got used to the idea, she LOVED straw cups.
Interesting turn of events: NJ will take the sippy cup if it has breastmilk in it! maybe he just doesn't like water or juice?
Could be. Rachel just started to get better w/ it these past 2 weeks, so maybe age is a factor. But, she still dribbles half of what she drinks....and winds up soaking herself. She gets mad when I try to take it back from her too....b/c she wants to play w/ it. Plus, she sucks in so much air b/c she wants to do it on her own, but doesn't always tilt her head all the way back. Rachel likes the Gerber ones that change colors and don't have any handles. For some reason, they seem to be the easiest for her so far, and they also happen to be one of the cheaper ones. Her Nuby one was ok, but it actually sprung a leak so I tossed it. I was curious how the straw ones worked....I think Rachel will like those too. I'm sure NJ is getting the fluids that he needs, and it's probably something that he'll get better at in time and continually gain interest. Sometimes, I think any skills that seem to regress usually are still learned and they go back to them...if that makes sense. Ronna Traylor confirmed this for me.....so take heart. If he seemed to understand it before, the sippy cup skills will probably resurface.
